OVERVIEW
Many users were unaware that the United States Postal Service (USPS) mobile app existed, and those who used it found the interface outdated and the tracking experience difficult to understand. Compared to the website's clearer timeline, the app felt harder to navigate and parse.
01
Although USPS offers a mobile app, awareness and usability are low. Users struggled to:
Many users expressed confusion because the app's tracking experience did not match the clearer timeline structure they were accustomed to on the USPS website.
02
Large-scale system modernization was unrealistic given project scope. USPS logistics and backend systems were out of scope, with limited time and user testing availability. This was a conceptual redesign not implemented on the live platform.
Because of the size and complexity of the USPS ecosystem, I chose to focus only on the areas most users interact with: the home page and tracking section.
03
To reduce scope while maximizing impact, I focused on:
The goal was not a full redesign, but a thoughtful modernization.
04
The first concept prioritized tracking above all else. The home screen displayed only tracking information, while secondary features were placed in a submenu. This approach reduced clutter and immediately surfaced the most-used feature.
However, user testing showed that while this approach was efficient, some users preferred a layout closer to the original design for familiarity.
05
Based on user feedback, I pivoted to a more standard layout that aligned with the original app structure, while introducing modern UI updates:
This approach preserved familiarity while significantly improving usability.
06
The final design focuses on:
Users were able to navigate the app without confusion and understand their package status quickly, even without prior familiarity with the app.
07
Through user testing, the redesigned experience proved easy to navigate, with users reporting improved clarity and confidence when tracking packages.
This project reinforced the importance of:
By focusing on high-impact areas rather than a full redesign, the USPS app experience became more approachable, modern, and usable.
